Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning

The Procedure

This procedure is one of the most effective exfoliation treatments available. It has been offered at finer cosmetic providers for almost 20 years now. It is a quick and simple process that uses a specially designed instrument called a dermatome to remove the outer most layers of dead skin cells leaving the skin immediately smooth, supple and vibrant and stimulating a production of new collagen and refreshed skin cells.

Benefits

Dermaplaning is often considered to be a ‘manual exfoliation’ technique because it effectively gets rid of the outer layer of skin to leave the skin much smoother. This procedure does not cause any trauma to the skin, and can be performed several times throughout the year for better results. Some of the key benefits of dermaplaning include:

  • Helps exfoliate skin with broken capillaries
  • Offers better results than traditional microdermabrasion
  • Little downtime
  • Skin is only slightly red and puffy after the treatment
  • Can temporarily remove fine, downy hair with ease
  • Performed just like shaving
  • Can be performed with a chemical peel

FAQ

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a simple and safe procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and ridding the skin of fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). When patients hear the word dermaplaning, they quickly associate the term with the procedure known as dermabrasion, and won’t even consider it as a possible treatment. Dermabrasion is a medical procedure in which the skin is abraded down to the dermis using a whisklike device. Dermaplaning, is a simple shaving of the epidermis.

How is it used?

We use a scalpel and a delicate touch to simply abrade the surface of the skin using light feathering strokes. This is a great treatment for pregnant or nursing women who want a deep exfoliation, but are not allowed to use peeling agents on their skin because of the risk that the chemicals will be absorbed into the blood stream, and may be transferred to the fetus or the child. It is also a first choice for patients who have excess vellus hair on the skin. This hair often causes a buildup of dirt and oils in the follicles, so removing the hair gives the patient healthier looking skin. Dermaplaning is most often used on patients with rough, dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne scarring, or fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment results in a more refined, smooth, “glowing” appearance.

What the patient can expect?

There is no downtime associated with this procedure. The patient should be educated about the importance of using sunscreen to reduce the chance of hyperpigmentation. Dermaplaning can be done as often as every two weeks, although it is usually done when vellus hair starts to grow back, which is generally in one month’s time.

Dermaplaning for exfoliation

Dermaplaning is an effective way of exfoliation. Using a blade we shave, or remove, the dead skin cells from the epidermis. Along with exfoliating, dermaplaning also helps remove the unwanted velus hairs from the face. Usually, you can see a difference after the first treatment. While this is an aggressive treatment, dermaplaning does not break the capillaries on the face.

Special considerations, risks and recovery

Dermaplaning procedure is safe when it is performed by a qualified, experienced and certified technician. The most common risk is a change in skin pigmentation. Permanent darkening of the skin may occur in some patients due to sun exposure in the days or months following treatment. On the other hand, some patients find the treated skin remains a little lighter or blotchy in appearance. You may develop tiny whiteheads after treatment. These usually disappear on their own, or with the use of an abrasive pad or soap. You may also develop enlarged skin pores; these usually shrink to near normal size once the swelling has subsided. While infection and scarring are rare with skin-refinishing treatments, they are possible.

Is it safe?

It is extremely safe when performed by a professionally trained aesthetician utilizing the right tools.

Once the vellous hair is removed will it grow back thicker?

No, this is physiologically impossible. The soft, fine vellous hair will grow back slowly usually in about 4 weeks. There are two types of hair that grow on our bodies: Vellous hair is the thin, fine, soft hair that typically covers the entire body. Terminal hair is the course hair that grows on the head, face in men, under arms, legs and pubic areas.

Can dermaplaning cause the skin to bleed?

Yes, excessive scraping nicks and cuts can cause bleeding. That is why it is very important to have professional training using the correct tool and have hands-on practice before performing this treatment on clients.

What areas can be treated?

Dermaplaning is performed on the face only.

How often can this procedure be performed?

Dermaplaning can be performed every 3 to 4 weeks. Treating the skin in this manner actually removes about 2 to 3 weeks worth of dead skin cells.

Can dermaplaning be performed with a chemical peel?

Yes. Dermaplaning is an excellent way to prep the skin for a chemical peel.

Does the skin actually peel from dermaplaning?

No. When dermaplaning is performed as prep for a chemical peel the visible exfoliation that the client sees will be as a result of the peel used in the treatment.

Who can be treated?

All skin types can benefit from dermaplaning. Typically clients over 35 are the best candidates and will return for regular treatments. It is highly addictive! Men can be dermaplaned on non-beard areas only.

Who cannot be treated?

Clients with active acne outbreaks or cold sores should not be treated until lesions are healed. Dermaplaning is great for diminishing acne scars but should not be performed during active outbreaks. Clients with bleeding disorders or difficulty clotting should not be treated. Clients with diabetes not under control by diet or medication should not be treated. Clients undergoing cancer treatment should also not be treated.

Is there any downtime after Dermaplaning?

No, that’s one of the benefits. The skin instantly has a healthier glow and feels amazingly soft, plus makeup glides on effortlessly for a flawless finish. This is a must have procedure before an important event.
